KNCO Insight spotlights The Club, a new contemporary opera created in Nevada County by composer Mark Vance and librettist John Deaderick. Host Tom Fitzsimmons explores how the production transforms the anxiety of hosting a book club party into an approachable, humorous and heartfelt story about marriage, relationships and community. The Grass Valley premiere features hometown mezzo-soprano Sarah Saturnino, baritone Matthew Cossack and Nevada County pianist Lynn Schugren, with performances August 7 and 9, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Chapel Hall inside the Grass Valley Museum and Cultural Center. The conversation also highlights the Nevada County Composers Cooperative, the Young Composers Project, local music education and the creative process behind writing and producing a modern opera in the California Gold Country.
