Good morning, Tom Well, good morning. Mo. Yeah, it's always great being at the Northridge in Nevada City such a great place I just saw somebody from I think IV construction. I think the t-shirt said I grab a place Oh locals, right? That's what it's all about here. It is. I think everybody in here. I recognize them or we have talked or Seen him in the last week or two It's a big week for you coming up this weekend with the classic cars. Yeah Yeah, we are just coming down from the fair, which is always exciting and full of new faces, which we really really love and then We're going into hot rod happy hour on Saturday So exciting all of our locals people actually drive from Pretty far in Northern, California to come and park their car in front of our restaurant hang out for happy hour specials Enjoy some like music and just talk Going on for years. So, how does the neighborhood take it? You know because everybody's you know, it's become just like a big auto show right right here on the street here. Yeah Yeah, I mean we sometimes we even run out of parking you can see Motorcycles parked down the side of the road and for the most part we have our neighbors come over and enjoy some of the festivities And stuff we've we've had only good comments, so we haven't heard anything bad about it, and it's only for two hours So it's in the middle of that Saturday afternoon, so it's not like we're keeping people up or you know Bringing people in late at night or any of those types of things Well, you're like a typical woman though. You got kids in school and all that stuff so what's the transition like for you personally here at the Northridge and just Everybody kind of getting back into the routine of kids at school and coming to the Northridge Yeah, it's it's this year the transition's been long with so many schools starting on different days I think like today might be the last Yeah, so So that's been kind of funny and altered our schedule at the restaurant, but for me, it's always exciting I mean my daughter loves going to Grass Valley Charter School She loves her new teacher and so this is always a really exciting time and for me It's nice because I know I don't have to juggle schedules or which camp or you know So it's so it like mellows out my schedule a little bit, so I'm always excited Well, you're like the least mellow person I know it's kind of funny because we're talking off the air you saw me talking all the time at the fair But you you run around here like there's nobody nobody's business I mean I go the pace that I need to go to make sure everybody gets fed So I mean and also I think that I've just been doing it for so long I don't even know if I can move slower even we're slow on Exciting on the menus or anything like that because you really can't change it much, but I mean it is hot weather lately I mean we have our summer specials are still going on even though school summer is out or in or done Something like that and so our salmon herbs salmon salad is amazing It's been a great hit this summer, and we have somebody it's not out yet But our brie chicken pesto sandwich, which is absolutely amazing homemade pesto grilled chicken breast Melted squishy brie so yummy so that whole menu. There's like ten different new salads on there I think that one of the favorites is the BLT Caesar salad really simple really light The other thing you do is help out the community and stuff So I don't know if you have people lined up for you know for this month or months ahead and stuff But if people are listening because I always kind of go You know you should talk to crystal over here at the Northridge if you have like an organization. That's local Yeah, we have one coming up, and I was just talking to him today But I don't have the date memorized, but it's coming up in a few weeks And it's the Children's Festival and about a city children's festival. Yeah, yeah So we're we were just talking about planning and promotions and how that night's going to look so they're coming up on our Calendar and they should be probably up on our website By the end of this week we hope so we're definitely looking forward to that I don't really have them here to talk to you too because yeah, they're always like a regular guest. Yeah I actually mentioned that I'm like maybe the same month as You're I'm going to have the fundraiser would be a really great time Yeah, so but I'll check that date for you before I before you leave all right crystal Well, thanks for hosting us here on the town my pleasure. Oh, I can think a lot of things more important alpaca Okay, for example Ray the cat that likes to hang around at Nevada City, Northridge. He's pretty important to well He is to them. That's for sure. Yeah, and to me too. I'd like to okay find out how he's doing And I was interested to hear that he he gets too many snacks when he goes over to Nevada City, Northridge So he's a chubby little kid. Well, he's pretty big. He's a Maine Coon. He's a really Oh Maine Coon. Yeah, they're almost Yeah, they're quite large. I hear they're quite the handful though. They can buy a YouTube on that. They're beautiful cats, but they're very demanding and they're yeah, and they're very intelligent too. Yes Just like alpacas About how about Wall Street what's going on there? Well, we've improved a little bit. We were mixed this morning now We're up across the board. I love the North Ridge. I mean here. I've memorized the menu I don't even have to look anymore, and I love their salads. We get pizza here all the time my daughter worked here Oh, yeah, ribs, and I mean fish and chips. It's all good stuff here, but we're talking fall preventions This has become like a second or third call maybe fourth calling I don't know how many callings you could possibly have Holly But you've really have a passion for this for the last few years Yes, you know first of all I was hired because I could talk that was the thinking but the more you learn about how Frequently people fall and what a life-changing event falling can be the more you want to keep people from falling so the falls Prevention coalition is all about that We'll come to your group and talk to you and give you some tips for reducing your risk of falling But the big thing we do every year Oh wait, and we do a balance class once a quarter that fills up so fast, and that's just based on capacity It's a five-week class to get people stronger because the stronger you are the less likely you are to fall And then every year we have the falls prevention summit all of these things are free Thanks to some funding from the county and from our sponsors and vendors of course But it's so important every day almost somebody tells me about a fall They had and I feel like I'm failing when they fall so I want to keep people from falling I mean there's a lot of things we have to battle through falls. I'm check. I'm kind of curious Years and years ago. I've been at the station so long, but I used to sell floor covering so every time I come into a business I look at the floor when you're dealing with fall prevention stuff Do you come into places and see what potential hazards are there? I'm just kind of curious I have done that and I apps also have a checklist for people that they can go through their home and see what they need To get rid of and one of the things we always say is if you have a throw rug if it's not Tacked down that it's gonna pull up the floor when it comes up, then you need to get rid of it But you know people want them in their bathrooms, and they don't always have those skid proof So it's really one of the things people trip people trip on those edges my mother-in-law's living with us now 98 She's got a walker, and we have a rug under our dining room table, and it stops her You know it's like her little if she's going too fast, so I've got a I've got it taped down pretty heavily But it's they're in our house, and I know better It's a tough thing and you're not failing It's just that I think we have to get it wrapped around our head that falls not only can they happen They probably will happen so the best thing you do is be as preventative as possible. Oh my gosh. Tom's got women kissing on him Don't you love me I love Tom. He's so sweet. He is just adorable all right I'm gonna give you that ten bucks in a little bit One of the other things uneven surfaces You know sidewalks our cities and our roads are not all that even anymore and people fall into a little divot I know someone who was getting her mail coming out of the Grass Valley post office looking at a male walked off the curb Broke her ankle so we have to pay attention We have to understand that you have to pick up your feet and the older we get the more we shuffle And it's not shuffleboard. It's really is us. Just not paying attention and not picking up So walking wearing sturdy shoes making sure that you have good vision checking to make sure your medications aren't Messing with each other those are all things we can do to prevent falls, but education is really important Oh, yeah, well you got your fall prevention summit. That's coming up Pride before the fall pride before the fall. What does that mean? Yeah so one of the things we are really working on is getting men to get education and one of the things that keep men from getting educated about falls prevention at least attending classes and we found coming to the summit is pride and I have this story of was at the Gracie ditch And I was getting ready to go on a hike with my girlfriend and out comes this guy And he was just covered in leaves and debris and I asked what happened He said he fell and I said oh well You know we have a balance class and we have this somebody goes well I don't want people to know I fell I'm like because he's so proud But it didn't stop the fall did it so pride before the fall is Came to my mind and then also it is going to be the 25th anniversary of 9-11 and I thought American pride and just having pride in Ourselves as a community would be something to touch on so those two together And that's where pride before the fall came in, but we are all about Educating people taking care of people with treats and food and coffee and lunch and free free free All right, so where's it happening? So it's at Sierra Presbyterian Church, which is at 175 Ridge Road It's right on the corner of Gold Flat in Ridge next to the historical society Yeah, and it used to have the big I don't know if they still do have like a Labor Day yard sale or something right don't anymore But that is exactly where it was so we encourage people to carpool or get dropped off or take Nevada County Connects, they're offering free transit that day Parking they have a probably a hundred and twenty spots, but we have about three hundred and fifty people who come So we're trying the lower level Parking Eschaton is going to give us a golf course actually be there with a golf cart to get people from the lower levels We're trying our best, but the biggest complaints. I get every year is parking, and I can't create parking lots I just can't I tried. I'm not into asphalt so And Again, it's a fall prevention thing that you don't want to encourage people to park and then walk on even Non sidewalk areas to get in there correct and really when we gather people of more than a few hundred We have to be in churches in this community There just aren't places that are big enough or if it is big enough like you know one of our arts Venues for instance in either the miners foundry or the Center for the Arts They don't have parking or enough parking so there is no win in that we've done our best to find the best place that we can have it that will have us which is the other part and So that's where we landed CR press last year We were a little overcrowded in the vendor area because so many community partners come in and they want to people to be exposed to in home care or senior living facilities or Having their balance checked or their blood pressure checked or making sure they're walking correctly And there's a lot of services that are offered fiduciaries and notaries, and so it's worth coming just for that But then we have a full program, and I'm very excited to have Susan Clayton speaking That's very exciting to get her local local woman. Yes, Clayton geriatric practice, so they her husband was dr. Christopher Clayton and now it's her daughter-in-law I believe Elizabeth that is running the practice with Susan spoke a couple of years ago to a group and she talked about Dimension how why for one thing so many people seem to be suffering from it That's just the fact that we're living longer than we used to people didn't live till they were 80 or 90 right we were done By 40 50 60 it's just we keep living longer, but then with that. There's all sorts of balance related Issues that people don't think about like with dimension you have sort of a tunnel vision You're really focused and so you're not looking ahead to see what's in front of you and Susan will talk a lot about that And she'll talk about other things about how memory and other maladies that come with that how? We don't see a general physician anymore. We see specialists right so our our heart doctor isn't talking to our kidney doctor And so one's giving you thinners and one's giving you thickeners and so all of those things can affect your Your lucidity and your balance Gate being an important thing to the actual pace that you're walking or how you're walking right so that we have a Podiatrist coming who is going to dr.. Tyler. I can't think of his last name at the moment Who is going to talk about making sure that your stride is? You're not going too far ahead of yourself Or you're not walking on the balls of your feet or the you know are the sides of your feet and making sure that you're wearing Good sturdy shoes that are right for you From like your husband about the importance of shoes of you when I was running and stuff that Having that foundations like key for everything else and it affects your knees if you're if your gait isn't Or stride isn't just right the way that you're walking so then you have a weakness in your knees and knees and hips you know We need all of those things so we need them strong and so homer nottingham will be giving us some Cheegong exercises homer so popular he closes us out every year with about 15 20 minutes of chair exercises But then that big hearty laughter that we get the forever young chorus is going to start the day as they often do and having socialized Socializing and singing they both really help you with your memory and your balance which you wouldn't think of the two together but there's something about singing that has a rhythm to it that keeps your brain active and So they we always promote the chorus, and they're a great group of people Retired I would say 70 plus Colleen Bond has been leading them for years and years and years and so it's going to be a really good day We've got an EMT coming to talk about people who won't call 9-1-1 or they refuse to be escorted or transported when they do call 9-1-1. Again, is that a pride like they're embarrassed or what? It's about it's pride and it's fear because some people think that if they admit they fell that their person like their children or adult children are going to say oh now it's time for you to go to a home and maybe it's not and they don't want to be limited in their freedom and so people don't get treated and sometimes they're walking around with fractures and you know things get worse you can get sepsis those sorts of things if you don't get the treatment so we really just want to educate people and let people know that there's nothing wrong with you if you've fallen people fall but there are things you can do to reduce your risk. It was interesting too when I was talking to you at the gazebo during the fair we had a conversation is that your senses are you know your sight your hearing all this stuff is all key to make sure that you could be as stable as possible. Absolutely and so we are going to have somebody talking about vision it was almost done see no evil hear no evil but so we have gold country hearing is going to be there to talk about how your hearing can affect your balance vertigo those things that come along with people want tinnitus and how that can really have an effect on your ability to keep your balance and to stay focused and not having not seeing clearly and not seeing being focused can certainly do that and then again having to make sure that you have like good sturdy shoes walking even to the mailbox even to the kitchen from the living room to the kitchen to the fridge it's still walking. So that's where Roxanne fell one time was just a step up into the kitchen she just kind of caught her uh tip of her shoe didn't pick up and she fell one day this is years ago but no I remember that fall it was a bad fall. Yeah we're learning and also obviously the bathroom is can be a hazard everybody's in there multiple times a day so just having um again not having those throw rugs in the bathroom but if you're up getting up at night making sure that you have a night light and good lighting that you give yourself time from when you're laying down to sit up to let your blood all get where it needs to go and steady your I don't know what to even call it just you know how you get just steady your fluids use a really firm surface to get yourself up and then take your time and do make sure that you're picking up your feet that's the biggest thing. We want to prevent the falls that can happen. I'm one of the guys that suffered a fall. It has really kind of handicapped me for the rest of my life in some respects. I mean that's kind of what happens if you have a bad fall like I did in my garage. But this is this is something that's inevitable but it's also for younger people to go to that might be caretaking their their relatives right? A lot of people come with their caregivers. Their caregivers bring those or those in the caregiving business who might not know. There's no age limit to who can come. You're never too young. You're never too old. We have lots of people in wheelchairs coming in but we have a lot of people who are just retired or are their parents. They're looking at what's happening with them and with Susan talking about dementia it's another facet that you want to be educated about. There's also information about getting respite for yourself or people who aren't ready to go to a facility but want to be at home. There are so many resources now to keep you in your home. My 98 year old mother-in-law is living in our home right now. We have a caregiver come in three days a week. It's affordable more affordable than you think but also there's funding available through the county if you have income issues. Oh also Freed is going to be there so if you need the bar in your bathroom and not that you know the the grab bar not the you know not the bar. I mean it's not bad to have a bar there but yes a grab bar yes for the shower and the bathtub. Yeah and they have also a lot of other tips for getting your home safe. Some people are going to need ramps now. Stairs are too much for them. So there there's a lot available. Foothills Compassionate Care will be there to talk about some of the things they offer including palliative care before hospice now so you don't have to be afraid. It's going to be a great day.
