Robotic Surgery Close to Home: Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital’s New da Vinci Xi System

Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital is bringing advanced robotic-assisted surgery to Western Nevada County with the arrival of its new da Vinci Xi surgical system. In this KNCO News Talk 830 community-health conversation, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tyler Hill welcomes Grass Valley general surgeon Dr. Asfandyar Khan for an accessible look at the technology, the people behind it and what it could mean for local patients. Dr. Khan explains that the da Vinci Xi is not an autonomous robot. The surgeon remains in the operating room and controls every movement from a specialized console while nurses, anesthesia professionals and other members of the surgical team care for the patient. The system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into precise movements of miniature instruments. Robotic-assisted surgery can provide surgeons with enhanced, magnified 3D visualization, greater dexterity and improved precision in confined areas of the body. Because many procedures can be performed through smaller incisions, patients may experience less pain, reduced blood loss and scarring, a lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stays and a quicker return to normal activities. The conversation explores how the technology may be used for hernia repairs, gallbladder procedures, colorectal and colon cancer surgery, and other complex abdominal operations. As the local program develops, the system may also support additional surgical specialties. Launching a robotic-surgery program involves much more than purchasing equipment. Dr. Hill and Dr. Khan discuss the extensive preparation required for surgeons, nurses, technicians, sterile-processing personnel and the entire hospital team. They also recognize the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation and community donors whose support helped make the acquisition possible. Beyond the technology itself, the new system expands access to sophisticated surgical care without requiring residents to travel outside the community. It may also help Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital recruit and retain surgeons who have trained with robotic-assisted techniques. Listeners will also learn what questions to ask when discussing surgical options with a physician and why robotic-assisted surgery may be appropriate for some patients but not others. Individual treatment decisions should always be made following a personal medical evaluation and a careful discussion of the risks, benefits and available alternatives.
